Summary of Position
The community partner for this Summer Student Intern position through the Clean Leadership program will be Acadia First Nation, reporting to Scott Jermey or Carew Meuse, Species at Risk Fieldworker and Manager. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for assisting the SAR fieldworker in data collection and community stewardship activities. The successful candidate needs to have an interest in natural resources or ecology/environment, desire to learn new skills, and part of a Mi’kmaw community).
Acadia First Nations is one of 13 Mi’kmaw Bands/First Nations in Nova Scotia. Acadia’s unique geographical composition spreads through the Southwestern regions of Nova Scotia spanning five counties from Yarmouth to Halifax. Acadia First Nation encompasses five (5) reserves – Yarmouth, Ponhook, Medway, Wildcat and Gold River. Additionally, Acadia First Nation has separate land holdings in Gardner’s Mill and Hammonds Plains. These lands boast the intrinsic beauty that Nova Scotia has to offer with lakes, rivers, resources and cultural significance. We have been working on Species at Risk projects for the past 5 years in Wildcat and Ponhook in particular.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in conducting fieldwork monitoring species and habitats for the Eastern Ribbonsnake and forest birds.
- Assist with other fieldwork, might include: Blanding’s Turtle, rare plants, Monarch Butterflies, Common Nighthawks, and Black Ash
- Facilitate community and youth workshops
- Check for water quality
- Work on wetland delineations and habitat characterisations
- Help organize a one-week youth ecological camp for Mi’kmaw youth in Kespukwitk, focusing on “Two-eyed Seeing” concepts.
- Assist other ecological staff in organizing events and conducting community surveys
- Other duties may arise to help the project and community carry out this work
- Must be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30;
- Must be a full-time student and intending to return to school in fall 2020;Is not a member of immediate family of community partner;
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or ‘green’ sector is considered an asset;
Able to work outdoors in various kinds of weather and have mobility to conduct fieldwork in forests/wetlands not on trails.
