Summary of Position
The community partner for this Summer Student Intern position through the Clean Leadership program will be Clean Annapolis River Project, reporting to the Administration Manager. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for assisting with planning and leading field work related to CARP’s wildlife habitat stewardship projects, and also assisting with field work for a variety of ecological monitoring and habitat restoration projects within the Annapolis River watershed. The successful candidate needs to be able to work independently and as part of a team, and needs to be able to complete physically demanding outdoor work in varying and unpredictable weather conditions and terrains.

Community Partner
The Clean Annapolis River Project (CARP) is a charitable non-profit organization with a mission to enhance the ecological health of the Annapolis River watershed through science, leadership, and community engagement. The Lead Field Assistant position is based out of CARP’s office, which is located in Annapolis Royal, Annapolis County, NS. Field work extends across the watershed, from Digby to Berwick, NS.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead volunteer teams and other field assistants in habitat surveys for wildlife, including nesting surveys, breeding bird habitat surveys, and visual habitat assessments.
• Assist with wood turtle research (e.g. turtle surveys, data entry, stewardship, nest protection).
• Undertake planning and lead field activities related to wildlife habitat restoration and enhancement work (e.g. livestock fencing, tree and shrub planting, willow staking, shelterbelt construction etc.)

• Assist with aquatic habitat surveys and restoration (e.g. HSI assessments, construction of digger logs and wing deflectors, etc.).
• Field work in various weather conditions (rain, heat, cold), and terrains (forest, wetland, watercourses).
• Scientific data entry on field cards, data sheets, and in computer.
• Help develop and deliver outreach, stewardship and educational activities (e.g. host events, presentations in local schools and groups; help assist junior naturalist club).
• Ecological monitoring of aquatic health parameters (e.g. temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity) using water quality equipment.
• Travel by small boat in watercourses (canoe or aluminum boat with motor).
• Attend and participate in project meetings, monthly staff meetings and Board of Directors live update meeting(s).
• Equipment maintenance including proper cleaning and storing (e.g. muddy boots, nets, water quality instruments, radio tracking equipment etc.).
• Development and/or distribution of brochures or outreach material.
• Other field work and office work as required from time to time.

Requirements/Qualifications

 Must be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada;
 Must be between the ages of 15 and 30;
 Must be a full-time student and intending to return to school in fall 2018;
 Is not a member of immediate family of community partner;
 Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
 Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
 Demonstrates interest in future employment in the environmental or ‘green’ sector is considered an asset;
 Be able to do physical work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on varying terrains
 Have strong communication and organization skills
 Full time access to a vehicle is an asset but not a requirement.
 Pleasure Craft Operating Card and valid First Aid certification is an asset.
 Previous field work experience is an asset.

Working Conditions
The Lead Field Assistant will be required to work in the outdoors, sometimes in remote and challenging settings, and will be expected to complete physically demanding tasks on a regular basis. The Field Assistant must be prepared to work in varying and unpredictable weather conditions and terrains.

Physical Requirements
The Lead Field Assistant will be required to spend extended periods of time conducting physically demanding work in the outdoors, under varying climactic conditions, and must be physical fit.
