Adopt-a-Watershed (AaW) is a free, curriculum-linked program that delivers presentations on the function and importance of watersheds to students in grades 4, 8, 10 and 12.  Students take part in indoor and outdoor activities that encourage their involvement in pollution prevention and water conservation activities.  By getting involved in watershed stewardship activities, students learn ways to maintain clean and healthy water sources for drinking and recreational activities.

The AaW program also provides students with links, activities and contacts for continued involvement in watershed stewardship after our time together.  Students learn about extracurricular opportunities with local groups and green teams, as well as about opportunities for pursuing careers in water.  In addition, participants can take part in a Watershed Warriors video contest by creating a short video individually or as a team on watershed stewardship initiatives in their communities.

AaW was developed by Clean Nova Scotia with support from Halifax Water as a pilot project in 2008 to advocate the importance of environmental sustainability and to address a lack of educational programming that emphasizes and educates Nova Scotians about the importance of maintaining healthy watershed areas.  Since its inception, Adopt-a-Watershed has reached over 2750 youth in the Lake Major Watershed.  This year, we are aiming to deliver the program to over 1300 students, facilitate several community riparian planting and clean-up events and explore opportunities for expansion of the program throughout the HRM.

Teachers in Dartmouth, Cole Harbour, Westphal, Eastern Passage, North Preston, Cherry Brook, Musquodoboit, and Chezzetcook are encouraged to contact the program coordinator to schedule presentations.  The AaW coordinator will work with teachers to determine whether presentations and outdoor activities can be combined for a half-day activity or if activities are better scheduled on separate days.  Youth groups such as environment clubs, Scouts, Guides, Brownies, and Boys & Girls clubs are also encouraged to take part in the program.
